If you have any access to a little eq, get these and don't listen to this nonsense. These are phenomenal for the money. My chain is Ifi Zen Dac2>Xduoo MT602 with Sylvania 1953 tubes>Sybasonic eq headphone amp with balance control(excellent btw), I just dial back the treble mids and bass to taste and these headphones are absolutely superb closed backed headphones for an excellent price! I own Ananda's and these i enjoy almost as much for different reasons. Different flavor. The bass is exceptional but is hot without eq'ing it down a bit. Once done...these are excellent.

So today I went to my local high end audio store in Manhattan to check out the Meze Elites and see if they were different enough to add to my Empyrean II's I got recently. The guy there essentially called me an idiot (in a nice way lol) for wanting to do that and instead pointed me to these D8000's. I had vaguely heard of these a year or so ago but never paid them much mind. Well I put them on and after listening to them bought them on the spot. They are absolutely incredible. Different than my Empy II's (may be overall "better", the Empy's are a more 'fun' headphone tho) but these things just blew me away. They sound even better on my WA7 which I didn't think was possible. Anyway, if you're watching this to try and decide if you should pull the trigger on them, and have made your way into the comments and are brazen/brave enough to take the option of a random dude on the internet's opinion, BUY THEM! You will love that you did!!

From your first impression of listening to them should someone who owns a Kato consider these as an upgrade with better tuning and buy these? The stocks are low and I would like to grab one if they are very good.

If anything the fact that vintage stuff don't have lower noise floor or better frequency response but sound better it should give the impression that there is more to audio than those meaningless factors and not that we are just all hearing things wrong. I hate how people in this hobby love to over simplify things to the least relevant things because they don't want to believe they don't understand everything from their non professional opinions.

I currently have Astell Kern's budget DAP which is called Activo CT 10 and I really love the music quality that Activo CT10 provides.

It has got a peak at about 4 khz rather than 2 khz. I equalize them by lowering the 4 khz region by 3.8 db and the 2 khz region by 1 db. I elevate the 20 khz and 60 khz regions by 0.5 db. With this equalization, given that they retain their unique and wonderful dynamics, they become as addicive as tobacco or coffee. You do not like them straight away, but once you're used to them, even the roughness of they pads becomes really addictive. Anyway, these need the aforementioned equalization in order to shine. One might argue, why bother equalizing a headphone when you can get a neutral one in the first place? Two reasons: timbre and dynamics. I also have the Hifiman Arya and the Sennheiser HD800s. They are marvellous with their soundstage and everything, but I still haven't found a headphone that does timbre and dynamics like my sr325is.

What about the difference between balanced 4.4mm vs unbalanced vs 3.5mm iem cables? I know that matters to some DACS for volume, but does the balance matter to sound?

in short Sennheiser IEMs are very Overpriced build very cheap with horrible accessories and you can literally get IEMs with much better accessories fit and the same if not better sound for $100 but you know what they say money spend on advertising is money well spend they can have the most cheap crap but it will sell just cause of the brand

I say get a speaker, I owned many flagship headphones, headphones cannot compete against good speakers with the equal value, some cheaper speakers can sounds better than LCD4 or even LCD5.

Is there an over ear headphone that sounds like the HD25?

Right now i think these are the best bang for your buck high resolving Planars, as crazy and frankly as sad as that might sound. Both Audeze and Hifiman, even DCA could well offer something cheaper, but they just don't. The Nano's are close, and the other Planars that really impressed me though certainly are are a shave off the LCD 2's are the Verums, I could see myself settling for both them, and I was lucky enough to find a 3 year old pair of these for only $650, it has been far and away the best money i've spent in Audio since (and I own a chord mojo!). Yes, they need EQ (at least to mimic Harmon) and if I were to pedantically pinpoint a flaw it's a light sizzle or energy to the high mids, but they are so close to perfect it's no surprise you see 10 year old beat up pairs everywhere.
